Event Description : 'New, New German Cinema : Focus on Two Directors' Films by Andreas Dresen & Christian Petzold
Over the past decade, German cinema has been revived with the emergence of a string of remarkable new filmmakers who have won international film awards, including four Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film with two films walking away with the Oscars. Beginning with Christian Petzold, Thomas Arslan and Angela Schanelec who in contrast to the more conventional efforts of Fatih Akin and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, have based their work in an emphasis on formal experimentation over spectacle and a preference for narrative experimentation over storytelling based on character psychology, whether transparent or ambiguous. As a group, these filmmakers are often referred to as "the Berlin School." Andreas Dresen working outside of this group is considered a trailblazer in New German Cinema with a reputation for being unique in his filmmaking approach. His idiosyncratic body of work, walking the fine line between reality and fiction, unafraid of dealing with social outcasts and exploring subjects buried deep in the margins of contemporary society.
Film screenings are as follows :
5th August : NIGHT SHAPES (Nachtgestalten)
(103 min; 1999; DVD; English subtitles) Director: Andreas Dresen
The visit of the Pope does not bring heavenly moments to all of Berlin's inhabitants. The youth of the streets, policemen as well as taxi-drivers try to find their place in life during one night. Andreas Dresen offers his version of modern German film through three short stories. Problems of the people on society's edge are presented by the spectator who does not judge nor psychoanalyze; yet his vision does not lack humor and humanistic sensitivity.
6th August : THE STATE I AM IN (Die innere Sicherheit)
(106 min; 2000; DVD; English subtitles) Director: Christian Petzold
Clara and Hans were German terrorists in the RAF in the 1960s and have been on the run for the last 20 years. Living underground in Portugal with their perceptive, socially awkward, antsy 15-year-old daughter Jeanne, they are suddenly forced to flee back to Germany. The conflicted Jeanne, craving for a normal teenager's life takes up with air-head hunk surfer Heinrich she met in a Portugal tourist spot, who turns up working in Germany, as her parents try to reunite with German terrorists from the past, now all respectable citizens unwilling to acknowledge their past.
7th August : GRILL POINT (Halbe Treppe)
(106 min; 2002; DVD; English subtitles) Director: Andreas Dresen
The story takes place in the nondescript town of Frankfurt/Oder near the Polish border. Two couples pushing 40, social friends who spend occasional evenings together, lead lives of quiet desperation. Nothing has happened to any of them in a very long time. Uwe, a friendly teddy bear of a man, runs a hot dog stand named Halbe Treppe (Grill Point) that leaves him little time for his frustrated wife Ellen and their two kids. Similarly, early morning radio host Chris and his second wife, Katrin go through the motions of life. Almost out of boredom, Chris and Ellen launch an affair. It is quickly discovered. Suddenly, no one is complaining about a dull life.
