Speaker's Comment : Over the last decade and more, environmental conditions of cities have attracted the greatest attention in India, as indeed globally. My talk is a contemporary history of this concern in Delhi, focused on matters of water purity and sanitation and the contamination of air. The presentation is oriented both to the past - analyzing the limits of the colonial intervention in creating a modern and sanitary state of things - and to the present, to consider the continuities and departures from the colonial schema as we address contemporary environmental challenges in India’s capital city Awadhendra Sharan Awadhendra
About the Speaker : Sharan is a Fellow at CSDS. Trained as a historian at Delhi University and the University of Chicago, Sharan’s research is focused on urban environmental issues. His book In the City, Out of Place. Nuisance, Pollution and Dwelling in Delhi c. 1850-2000 is due to be shortly published by Oxford University Press, Delhi.
