Curator's Note :
AM I ? the title of the show suggests the turbulence and the array of thoughts struggling within the artist with an interminable quest for this answer of existence. Pondering on different emotions with an urge to come out with something specific Sanjeev has painted a continuum of work in a series and named it Gentle Bite. The title of the work signifies the dexterity of the balance and the optimism and idealistic situation, the artist is craving for. He seems pretty calm and composed while he pours all the thoughts and chaos of his mind over
his creative pursuit. Born and studied in Patna, Bihar he has travelled extensively throughout the world amassing and imbibing various cultures, tradition and art practices leading into gamut of experiences.
At the very first instance the works may appear to be radical and gloomy. And the onlooker may shrink with a feeling that the works are not pleasant or eye soothing rather provocative. But as they go through the body of works and fathom its depth they would understand its gist. They would realize how these works are in proximity to the reality of our contemporary lives and may sense the cathartic pleasure of watching these works. These works carry the blend of thoughts he wants to put on a canvas using objects symbolizing the philosophical implication, political mystification, and spiritual assimilation.
Sanjeev has done a number of solo shows and group shows in last twenty five years where the art aficionados remember him with an artist of intense working style and quirky subjects. After a gap of about four years and continuous work in his studio in Delhi he has come up with this show comprising of sizeable number of twenty three works that will give the viewer a complete sense of the objective the artist wants to convey.
He wanted to portray the various phases of lifecycle and we can see one of the works where an infant is coming out of the shell carrying the fire in one hand and the bunch of flowers in other. In another work a tiny foetus is coming in this mundane world carrying a ray of hope. In both the works we can see the depiction of fire which symbolizes as one of the important element of life out of the five elements.
He always feels the problems inherent within the pleasant looking beings of this world. One of his works where all sorts of objects including the Barbie, teddy bears, butterflies, birds etc he uses for his creative expression are pierced in to the spears. Another work carrying a piety meditating Buddha is surrounded by the various emotions like passion, romanticism, natural beauty implying the intrusion of different objects while you are in such a mystic position. In the work titled Gentle Bite I he has portrayed a Barbie doll inside the turtle surrounded by the butterflies which signifies the artist’s wish for the pleasant and happy world for centuries / forever, as the turtle is believed to be auspicious in mythology and one of the longest living creatures in this world. In the work titled Gentle Bite XV, he has made a cob-web and behind that there is a huge spider that has created this whole system signifying the contemporary world.
Sanjeev has used very stark colours primarily black and red which gives an intense feeling of passion and radical approach towards this worldly social hegemony. These works create a loud statement and penetrate the mind and soul of the perceiver. When he speaks about these works he peeps in to the parameters of various philosophies, mythological thoughts, and concurrent issues of social scenario. I conclude this short narrative with a quote of Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza which I personally feel and can deduce that the artist feels the same and leave this exhibition to perceive, enjoy, decipher and introspect.
