About Celiac Disease : As you might be aware, celiac disease is sensitivity to gluten, a protein found in wheat and some other grains including barley, rye and oats. It can creep up silently on just about anyone—across age, gender, class and race—and if left undiagnosed, can become a silent killer.
Considered a rare condition, both by health professionals and the general public, it is no longer so and is fast becoming an epidemic in India, with 1 in 96 people in North India at risk of this disease, as per a recent study published in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. If that sounds surprising, it is because this is a hidden epidemic—nearly 97% of all cases remain undiagnosed because the symptoms are wide-ranging and confusing. Anaemia, diarrhoea and malnutrition are often associated with celiac disease, but these symptoms may remain silent in most cases.
It can also no longer be considered a childhood disease, as majority of cases are being diagnosed between 40 and 60 years of age and have symptoms for approximately 9 years before diagnosis. In fact, nearly 25% cases are diagnosed in individuals over 60 years of age.
Given its grave concern at the increasing prevalence of celiac disease amongst Indians, the Society has organised this event to build awareness amongst the medical fraternity and the public alike.

About Celiac Society For Delhi : Incorporated in May 2006, Celiac Society for Delhi (CSD), the first non-profit organization, brings together eminent practitioners in the field of medicine, education and the food industry. Its mission is to create awareness about timely diagnosis and management of celiac disease.
