Event Description : 'Nicholas Roerich: A Quest and a Legacy' Discussion around the new book by Manju Kak (New Delhi: Niyogi 2013)

Chief Guest: Dr. Karan Singh, MP

About the Book : India was the spiritual home of Russian painter Nicholas K. Roerich (1874—1947). From the time of his childhood spent in the family estate `Isvara’ --reputedly once owned by an Indian Raja-- India was in his consciousness. Painter Nicholas Roerich arrived in Bombay, India, with his family on 30 November 1923. Soon after he undertook his daring mountainous expeditions into the Trans-Himalayas, Tibet & Mongolia which resulted in about 7000 paintings. It was befitting that Roerich died in December 1947, at Kullu, Himachal, India, where his simple grave lies under willows, marked by a monolithic rock that reads `Maharishi’ or Great Sage.
Since Nicholas Roerich continues to arouse the interest of extensive scholarship and the question often asked is: what is the draw and pull of a man who was, in his final avatar, a painter of mountains? This anthology of essays on the artist seeks to answer just this. The contributors— scholars, disciples, practitioners—have looked at Roerich’s life from varying perspectives to explain his multi-faceted personality. Through these writings, one hopes to come to a holistic understanding of the man and his times.
