Event Description : Kala Drishti presents 'Afro Adanma' an exhibition of African Art & Culture.

The concept behind the show
Kenya the east African country conjures a picture of open sunny skies, greenery and equatorial forests, pristine beaches and coral reef. With the shimmering Indian Ocean on one side and mountains forming its border with Tanzania, Kenya has a culture born of countless sources due to it’s long and complex history.

Greeted by a resounding “Jambo” the visitor is witness to a rich cultural pot pourri. influenced by various sources. The Kenyan culture is influenced by the life of it’s nomadic tribes like the Masais. It’s music is structured around a deep rhythmic chant, specially by the use of drums .This magical charm is also reflected in its visual art which has a long and traditional influence.

There are many examples of rock art and cave paintings by early man and similar designs and motifs are carried through recent centuries. Many Kenyan traditional societies play great significance on decoration of both functional and ritual objects. There is great stress on physical beauty and adornment like elaborate hairstyles and body-painting.

Themes are related to life like dancing, warrior-clans, wildlife, every-day activities and relationship like mother and child. The colors are bright and bold like red, ochre-yellow and ebony black. The figures are tall and shapely with their dark ebony color and adorn tastefully. The paintings are either on canvas or on cloth and batik is a very common style used.

Besides, paintings there is an array of artifacts to pick choose from like Masai-warriors animal and human forms with high aesthetic appeal mostly in wood and soap-stone. The traditional wooden mass with swords and knives placed on there sides are also very popular.

The aim of this show would be to put together all these cultural highlights of Kenya. The stress would on Kenyan visual arts like paintings and artifacts accompanied by pulsating Kenyan music and African tribal dances. The visitors would, thus, be able to absorb an all pervasive and exotic Kenyan- African experience.
