Not only is this a form of creative expression for the artist but it also served as means for her to fight the dark abyss she was left at post her extremely painful therapy which she received when she suffered from Meningitis together with the 6th nerve palsy.
The turmoil buried deep within finally found a way to release itself and the healing finally began and it helped me to rise back to the surface. Yajanika after graduating from Faculty of Visual Arts, BHU, had started her own setup- Designaccess in 1999.
Though the love for sketching began in childhood she got introduced to Charcoal sketching during her college years . Her journey in the creative arena began when she started as an independent media graphics professional and worked on did promos, titles, animation, show packaging for various sports and entertainment TV channels.
Her current work exhibits sketches that seem inspired by Architecture and design.
Architecture cannot divorce itself from drawing, no matter how impressive the technology gets. Drawings are not just end products: they are part of the thought process of architectural design. Drawings express the interaction of our minds, eyes and hands. This last statement is absolutely crucial to the difference between those who draw to conceptualize architecture and those who use the computer. It can be argued that architectural drawing can be divided into three types, which I call the “referential sketch,” the “preparatory study” and the “definitive drawing.” What Yajanika brings to the limelight is referential sketch that serves as a visual diary, a record of an architect’s discovery. There is a certain joy in their creation, which comes from the interaction between the mind and the hand. Our physical and mental interactions with drawings are formative acts. A sketch may serve a number of purposes: it might record something that the artist sees, it might record or develop an idea for later use or it might be used as a quick way of graphically demonstrating an image, idea or principle.
The answer to her curiosity towards her doing the architectural sketches of sites and other monuments was simple :” .the monuments and ghats of varanasi were my muse...every ruin and monument with history would be my interest.....at that time only live sketch was possible as there was no mobile to catch a frame...-- the incident which pushed me to this direction....”.
When one travels and works with visual things – architecture, painting or sculpture – one uses one’s eyes and draws, so as to fix deep down in one’s experience what is seen. Once the impression has been recorded by the pencil, it stays for good, entered, registered, inscribed.
Sketching that is generally a prescribed part of the studies of art students became a holistic medium for artist Yajanika, who find strength and solace in sketching.
