Event Description : The Japan Foundation presents 'Forest and Other Pieces' by Noriyuki Sawa Puppet Theatre.
Noriyuki Sawa brings “Figure Theatre” to 5 major Indian cities in this tour. The new form of theatre known today in Europe as “figure theatre” is one in which people and puppets perform together on stage with the same presence. In Japan it has been introduced under the name “object theatre.” Noriyuki Sawa is a contemporary puppet theatre performer who studied figure theatre at the Czech national Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and has continued to perform in collaboration with numerous leading theatres such as DRAK from his base in the Czech Republic. Today Sawa tours the world with performances from his large repertoire of works such as a solo silent drama Macbeth using masks and puppets, and richly coloured shadow play theatre works, as well as smaller works based on Japanese folktales.
On a battlefield a deeply wounded soldier is trying to escape from his enemies.
So he lies down in the forest and then falls unconscious hovering
between life and death.
A white woman appears in front of him, and lures him from the place
where he is lying. He soars skyward with her.
Still he notices his wounded body down below in the forest.
He is drawn to it and at last decides to return into his body.
The woman then leaves, and the soldier wakes.
The wound is now healed.
After looking up the sky for a while, he starts to walk the earth
again as a soldier.
This production was inspired by an ancient Japanese legend.
After that story, his shining small pieces follows, like different
kinds of jewels in a forest night..
