For our seventeenth session we invite Dr. Sharad Chandra who’ll be in conversation with Prof. Kusum Aggarwal.
Dr. Sharad Chandra is the author of various books on Albert Camus, poems, short stories, book reviews, columns and several articles. Dr. Chandra has been bestowed with several prestigious honours such as the “Grand Prix du Rayonnement de la langue française” by the Académie française, Paris in 1992 and the award, Dwivageesh Samman (Best Translator) by the Bharatiya Anuvad Parishad, New Delhi, in 1993.
Her most recent publications are Sense of the Sacred: Camus and India (National Publishing House, 2010), Albert Camus et l’Inde (Editions Indigène, 2008), Albert Camus aur Bhagavadagita (Rajkamal Prakashan, 2006), Albert Camus et l’Inde (Editions Balland, 1995), Albert Camus and Indian Thought (National Publishing House, 1989) amongst others. She has translated some of the major works of French and Portuguese poets and writers including Les Identités meurtrières by Amin Maalouf (Pehchan ke Liye Hatyayein, Rajkamal Prakashan, 2012), Syngue Sabour, pierre de patience by Atiq Rahimi (Sange Sabour: Sahansheel Pattar, Rajkamal Prakashan, 2010), Les Mots by Jean Paul Sartre (Shabda, Sahitya Akademi, 1992), La Route des Flandres by Claude Simon (Flanders’ Road, National Publishing House, 1991), selected poems of Fernando Pessoa (Vaha Mein Nahin Hun, National Publishing House, 2005 and Fernando Pessoa ki Kavitayen, Saransh Prakashan, 1997). Her Hindi translations of works by Albert Camus including Le Malentendu (Arth Dosh, Rajkamal Prakashan, 1989), Les Justes (Nayaya Priya, Rajkamal Prakashan, 1988) and Caligula (Caligula, Rajkamal Prakashan, 1987) have been very popular on stage.
Prof. Kusum Aggarwal studied at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and at the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne. Currently, she is Professor of French and Francophone Literature at the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies at the University of Delhi and specializes in the Francophone Writing in sub-Saharan Africa, the African debate and the relationship between literature and science. Her notable publications include Amadou Hampâté Bâ et l’africanisme (1999), re-editions with an Introduction of the Baron Roger’s Kelédor, Histoire africaine (1828) and Fables sénégalaises (1828) published by L’Harmattan (series “Autrement mêmes”) as well as many articles. She contributed to the commemorative volume of Cahiers d’études africaines (198-199-200) and recently wrote an article on the postcolonial theory (in collaboration with Viviane Azarian, University of Beirut) for an edited collection to be published by Karthala.

Event Details : Writers, Etc is our literary platform: a space where the written word gets primacy, where written ideas and their practitioners can interact with each other and the general public, coming together to ask pertinent questions and seek their answers: what role does literature play in contemporary societies? How do writers see their responsibilities vis-à-vis the public and, turning that over, how do we see writers? How has the written word adapted to its place among the growing pantheon of varied and addictive forms of cultural transmission? The aim is to encourage a discovery, unencumbered by genre, of all the written oeuvres, ranging from living legends to new and emerging talent.
