Event Description : 'Temporal / Eternal' an exhibition of new works by Tanya Hastings Gill.
Earlier this year in March, Tanya Hastings Gill, a visual artist, embarked on a
year of research and making in New Delhi, India as a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Scholar. In
addition to maintaining her studio practice, Gill is researching the intersection of Craft
and Contemporary Art in India. The intersection of craft and contemporary art is close
to her heart, as she works with the revived craft of cut paper in a contemporary context.
Gill is a cut paper artist who pushes this thriving art form to new heights by utilizing
reflective color, shadows and open installation to engage the space with her hand-cut
paper works.
In Temporal / Eternal on view at the India Habitat Center, Gill is exhibiting a range
of works, all which actively experiment with materials and explore the theme of the
temporal, and its counterpart the eternal. The temporal is defined as enduring for a
period of time, as transitory. The eternal is defined as without beginning and without
end, as always existing. The duality of the temporal and the eternal is at the core of
Gill’s work. Gill’s material choices and methods inherently speak about temporality, the
delicate and subtle changes in daily life. The elusive shadows, reflective light, and color
in her work reference the infinite, the eternal, through their intangible presence. Many works in Temporal / Eternal experiment with foil and tinsel, highlighting the
reflective qualities of these materials. In the Black (W)hole Series, Gill inlays silver foil into
the paper bringing the surface into question as a result of the reflective quality of the foil.
In the Tinsel Series, Gill utilizes ready-made tinsel. In using ready-made tinsel, Gill is
simultaneously asking the viewer to bring their personal associations with tinsel to the
piece, and to suspend them. When one can suspend associations, the material can be
seen anew and the light reflections and beauty witnessed simply for what they are.
However, when the familiar associations we have with tinsel are kept in mind, multiple
layers of meanings emerge.
In other work, such as the Light Series, Gill returns to painting, her first love, using
silver ink to encapsulate the glow from string lights. The works call to mind celebrations,
both personal and collective. The works again return to the idea of the temporal and
eternal; a celebration is temporal, but is often a celebration of the eternal.
