Event Details : "Faces and Mirrors" an exhibition of paintings by Varuni Sinha and photography by Suraaj Ajithakumar.
It is the human condition to never be satisfied with what we have or know. Seduction lies in a glimpse of what lies hidden. To uncover the world, we sometimes rely on the scientist’s instruments to seek the material truth, that which can be weighed and measured. At other times we rely on the artist’s intuition and seek the intangible, that which we experience inside.
It is within us that we find the Nava Rasas, the nine classical human emotions, encompassing within them, the whole range of humanity and existence itself. With their distinct takes on these rasas, Varuni Sinha’s paintings and Suraaj Ajithakumar’s photos try to capture in one exhibition, the range of the human life. A unique blend of painting and photography; two similar, yet separate perspectives of the world we live in, this exhibition is an eccentric glimpse into the universe within.
The artists :
Varuni Sinha
Varuni is a self-taught artist who works with her fingertips and nails to dab paint onto the canvas. She feels that individuals have always communicated through their hand gestures; they use their fingers to emote, write, play music, to think and in the current age of touchscreens, to explore. She uses her fingers to scratch at the surface of what appears to be, to expose what lies beneath. In this exhibit, she works with different mirrors - an examination of Indian and international politics, environmental issues, the internet, reflections on human faces and religious iconography through the Nava Rasas to express her ideas. She has showcased her works earlier at the Teinshin Okakura Gallery to create a fusion of art and Japanese poetry.
Suraaj Ajithakumar
Suraaj’s photography offers a broad range of works. From urban spaces to nature, from dancers to street life, from graffiti to the Taj Mahal, he stretches the canvas. The camera teaches him the beauty the world has to offer. It might sound trite but for him, good photography is simply attention to detail. It doesn't produce itself when he chases a perfect click. It happens when he is least aware. In this exhibit he has tried to coalesce the Rasas of inner human experience with the lens that tries to encase outer, tangible forms. Shot from different places and moods, across a span of two years, this is the first time these works have been put up for public viewing.
