Malhar in district Bilaspur is part of the ancient region of Dakshin Kosal. Excavations at its mud fortification—the first large-scale excavations undertaken in Chhattisgarh—reveal a cultural sequence from prior to the 4th century BCE up to the 4th and 5th centuries CE.
