1st October : 881 (Mandarin/Hokkien/2007/105mins) Dir. Royston Tan
881 tells the story of two childhood friends who grow up mesmerized by the glitz and glamour of Getai (a boisterous live stage performance held during the Hungry Ghosts Festival), and dream of one day performing on stage. Followed by a post screening dialogue between Indian director Anurag Kashyap and internationally acclaimed filmmaker Royston Tan.
Collab:
2nd October : Singapore GaGa (English/Mandarin/Malay/2005/55mins) Dir.Tan Pin Pin. A 55-minute paean to the quirkiness
of the Singaporean aural landscape. It reveals Singapore's past and present with delight and humour. We hear buskers, street vendors, school cheerleaders sing hymns to themselves and to their communities. From these vocabularies (including Arabic, Latin, Hainanese), a sense of what it might mean to be a modern Singaporean emerges. The film is Singapore’s first documentary to have a cinema release and it enjoyed a seven week sold out run at The Arts House. Apart from being acquired for screening on board Singapore Airlines, it has also played in film festivals
around the world. Singapore GaGa was voted Best Film in 2006 by The Straits Times.
8:30pm|Red Dragonflies (2010/96mins) Dir.Liao Jiekai Rachel and her two friends explore an abandoned railway track that runs through a dense forest, but an unforeseen incident brings their little adventure to an abrupt end. Elsewhere, a woman rekindles an old friendship with a high school friend. When a little boy from her past reappears, she finds herself retracing a trail of iron and wood. Wistful and mysterious, the film depicts a world littered with incongruity, absences and traces of childhood friends.
3rd October : Sandcastle Dir.Boo Junfeng
Followed by a dialogue between Indian director Bobby Bedi and internationally acclaimed filmmaker Boo Junfeng.
