Event Details : 'I Will Not Cry' a powerful solo play by Lushin Dubey, directed & scripted by Arvind Gaur for Save the Children.
The play highlights the issue of child survival in India and is an exceptional blend of theatre and multimedia. Through satire and music excerpts, the play brings alive the sad truth of millions of child deaths in our country. It hopes to evoke our collective responsibility, as a nation and a society to act together. This play is in support of Save the Children’s global campaign ‘New Born & Child Survival’. Through this play, Save the Children aims to reach out to the government and the public at large to advocate for change – change for India’s children, change for India’s future.
The play premiered in Delhi on 23 November 2011, followed by a dynamic discussion with eminent panelists –Shabana Azmi, actor and social activist; Syeda Hameed, Member - Planning Commission; Jean Dreze, economist and author; Harpal Singh, Chairman -  Save the Children India  and Mohua Choudhary a media personality. The play has travelled to Jaipur, Mumbai and Kolkata and enthralled the audience with the powerful performance.

About the Artists : Lushin Dubey is one of the best-known faces in the Indian theatre circuit. Both onstage and off, Lushin Dubey has been a key figure in Indian theatre for over 20 years. Back in 1986, she pioneered children’s theatre movement that has continues as her passion even today. Lushin runs two theatre enterprise – Kidsworld and Theatreworld.
Dubey has tried her hand at almost everything possible in the world of theatre. In the last 10 years she has focused on issue based theatre on wide range of issues from The life of Gautam Buddha on peace and compassion, to two solos Untitled and Bitter Chocolate on the issue of women empowerment and abuse, Muskaan on HIV, Salaaam India a take on India today to Jee Saab Jee highlighting humanism against the backdrop of terrorism and violence. She essayed the lead role of Lady Macbeth in Alyque Padmasee’s Macbeth. All her plays have travelled widely in India and around the world.
After completing her Masters in Childhood and Special Education from the US, Dubey was deeply involved in teaching mentally challenged children in the US and then in India at the American Embassy School.
Lushin has also been part of screen and television has received several awards national and international notable among them being Edinburgh Fringe First for her role in Desdemona in Othello in black and white and Canadian Gemini/Emmy Award for her role in the film ‘Murder Unveiled’.

Arvind Gaur, Indian theatre director, is known for his work in innovative, socially and politically relevant theatre. Gaur's plays are contemporary and thought-provoking, connecting intimate personal spheres of existence to larger social political issues. His work deals with communalism, caste issues, feudalism, domestic violence, crimes of state, Politics of power, violence, injustice, social discrimination, marginalisation, and racism. Arvind is the leader of Asmita, Delhi's "most prolific theatre group” and is also an actor trainer, social activist, street theatre worker and story teller.
Gaur was the recipient of a research fellowship awarded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (India) (1997–98). He was on the guest faculty of Delhi University for Theatre in education program for three years. He has conducted many theatre workshops and performed in various colleges, institutions, universities and schools in India and abroad.

Notes for Editors : Save the Children’s New Born & Child Survival (NBCS) Campaign: Save the Children is running a global campaign in over 50 countries since 2009 aimed at achieving MDG 4 - reducing child deaths by 2/3rd by 2015.  India has the highest burden of child deaths in the World.
