Event Details : Habitat Film Festival 2012.
This year as we celebrate 100 years of Indian Cinema and when the country is declaring it as a watershed year at Cannes with the showcasing of three Indian films, the Habitat Film Festival slips into its seventh year faithfully celebrating the oft unsung creativity of India’s rich cinematic outpouring. The Habitat Film Festival, one of the foremost festivals for Indian Cinema returns this year from July 21st-29th, once again bringing our audiences a pick of the year’s award winning, critically acclaimed as well as box office favourites.
What makes the Habitat Film Festival unique and a stand alone, is its focus on not mainstream films alone, but the talents of regional cinema that, after a long period of being overshadowed in the public gaze by the omnipresence of Bollywood is regaining lost ground. There is a heartening resurgence of Independent Indian cinema. As Anurag Kashyap the reigning champion of Indian cinema said in a BBC interview while at Cannes this year. “........Its going through a real change in the kind of film makers that are coming through, the kind of stories that are being told, the kind of films that are being made and the kind of films that are working at the box office.
An important feature of the Festival is the acknowledgement of a director/actor/writer/technician for his contribution to the reel and “real” world. Previous years retrospectives have seen us focussing on the works of Kannada director Girish Kasaravalli, film maker Sudhir Mishra, actor – director Revathi, editor Sreekar Prasad, director – actor Rituparno Ghosh amongst others.
This year the retrospective celebrates Waheeda Rehman, one of the most prominent actresses of the Golden Era of Indian cinema. The graceful and unassuming actor who recently celebrated her 76th birthday has consistently captivated audiences over the years from heroine to mother to grandmother roles from her first Tamil hit Rojulu Marayi in 1955 to Delhi 6 in 2009. The Festival presents select gems starting with the landmark Guide and including Pyaasa, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Teesri Kasam & Chaudhvi Ka Chand. With Guide we also salute the forever young, lovable and tireless icon of Indian cinema Dev Anand, whose uninterrupted run came to an end at age 88, months after the release of his latest film Charge Sheet.
Showcasing this year are National Award winning films like Deool, Vaagai Sooda Vaa, Phijigee Mani, Adi Madhyantam amongst others. With selections from across the country, the entire package bears the flavours of India.
In the spirit of celebrating creative excellence, shared histories and common concerns, the Habitat Film Festival this year extends its frontiers to welcome the first Oscar winning film from Pakistan, the documentary Saving Face.
The screenings will be followed by interactions with directors/ producers giving cinema lovers an opportunity of a focused interaction and Q&A.
