29th June 2012 : Monsieur Lazhar (2011)
Director: Philippe Falardeau; French - English subtitles, 94 minutes.
Bachir Lazhar, an Algerian immigrant teacher, develops a relationship with his elementary school class after their previous teacher kills herself. Using great sensitivity and humour, the film follows a humble man who is ready to transcend his own loss in order to accompany children beyond the silence and taboo of death. Nominated for nine Genie Awards and winner of six, including Best Motion Picture. Awarded Best Canadian Feature Film at the Toronto International Film Festival and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film
Canada Diverse : Canada is a nation of immigrants, with one in five Canadians born outside of the country. These films are stories of this rich ethnic diversity – whether it is a search for roots (Incendies) or coming to grips with the past (Monsieur Lazar) or searching ways to preserve a heritage (Carry Me Home, Men of the Deeps). There's also snapshots of Jewish Montreal, as seen through the eyes of the late great novelist Mordecai Richler (Barney's Version) or glimpses of the "mainstream" cultures of Vancouver (Love and Other Dilemmas) and Montreal (Sticky Fingers).
