« You are alive, and there is no cure for it », says a character of Beckett in Fin de Partie, a quote that could be used to describe the flat landscapes of Belgium, the homeland of Bouli Lanners, where his movie Eldorado takes place.
Nevertheless, behind its depressive background, Eldorado is also both an irresistibly comic and a deeply touching movie.
This ambiguous atmosphere is served by the surprising relationship between the two main characters: Yvan, a dealer of vintage cars, a surly guy but who has a heart of gold , meets the young Elie while he was burgling him.
However, it doesn’t beat him. On the contrary, he becomes fond of him and accepts to bring him back to his parents…

Director : Bouli Lanners

Year : 2008

Duration : 85 mins

Theme for the Month : Stranger than Paradise
From the Italian Neorealism to the Brazilian Cinema Novo or the French New Wave, film directors have often been interested by dealing with the stories of marginal characters. First perceived as a source of fascination and lyricism, we must also consider that marginality is always relative: we are marginal in comparison to an institutionalized group at a certain moment, in a certain place and with reference to a social norm, moral or intellectual. Because it can serve the identification with some people who are usually outlawed from society cinema contributes to the evolution of social norm and barriers.
“The lyricism of marginality may find inspiration in the image of the outlaw, the great social nomad, who prowls on the confines of a docile, frightened order.”
Michel Foucault in Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison
