Event Details : 'Unorganized' celebrating Women's Leadership.
The term ‘unorganized’, much used in relation to spaces where women work, can distort understanding and policy response in developing countries. ‘Unorganized’ workers are in fact highly organized, and are exploited by other organizations through buy-back arrangements or piece-rate payment. The term is also used for craftspeople, who may not form a collective, yet together weave an unspoken language through their skills.
The seminar will include an overview of the pathbreaking Arjun Sengupta Report, make interconnections between economic and cultural domains through a session on crafts, and explore how formulaic government schemes like Self-Help Groups are transformed by women into membership-based organizations giving them voice across party, class and caste.
