Event Details : 'Sun City & Other Stories' photography exhibition by Sunil Gupta. 
Paris - San Francisco - Delhi 
This new series by Sunil Gupta, Sun City, was commissioned by the Centre Pompidou, Paris in 2011 and its production supported principally by Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi. With Sun City, Sunil Gupta realizes a fictional narrative loosely based on the 1962 film, La Jetée by Chris Marker. The movie was originally constructed as a “photo-story” or slideshow narrated by a commentator and recounting one of the narrator’s childhood memories. The original elliptical form of La Jetée has been retained so the main character sees his own death in the “beginning” and we return to that scene as reality in the “end”. Sunil Gupta decides to approach a still delicate subject in India: homosexuality. Only in 2009 did the Court of Justice decriminalize a colonial act that stated that homosexuality and the “non natural sex” was a criminal act punishable with 10 years of imprisonment.
Sunil Gupta was born in 1953 in New Delhi, where he lives and works.
