Event Details : 'Two Generations of Jírů Photography' An exhibition of photographs by Vaclav Jiru and Jiru Jiri.
During the 1968 Russian-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, Václav Jiru chose to remain in Prague to continue his work as Editor-in-Chief of the four-language Fotografie magazine he had founded. Václav faced persecution; to the regime it mattered little that he had published 12 unsurpassed photography books. His nephew and student, Jiří Jírů, escaped to Belgium to start a successful career, becoming a stringer for TIME, The New York Times, National Geographic, etc.
In 1993, he returned to Prague to become the first personal photographer to Václav Havel. This, in his words, ‘bizarre presidential period’ of seven years culminated in the release of a book of surrealistic photographs, printed in sepia and manually coloured. Jiří opened the Jírů Photo Museum in homage to his uncle Václav (1910–80), in the house where he lived and worked. The project has been achieved with the support of the Archive of the National Museum.
