The hurdy-gurdy is a type of violin whose strings are rubbed by a rosined wooden wheel attached to a crank which the player turns to create a continuous bowing effect, while pressing keys that stop the strings to produce melody. It also has drone strings and varying the attack of ‘bowing’ produces a rhythmically variable buzzing. The Hurdy-Gurdy Band specializes in 18th-century street, dance-hall, wedding, theatre and garden party music, melodies in which one can hear the great Indo-European family of music that stretches from Bengal to Ireland.
