Uma Lohtia is a naturally gifted artist. She has explored various mediums: oil on canvas, watercolor, and mixed media—whatever inspires her brush. She has also created beautiful “wash paintings”, a dying medium that she intends to revive.
Having lived in Delhi most of her life, the city’s countless monuments have always fascinated Uma. Each lofty spire, each crumbling brick, each sandstone wall inspires her to re-create the story of its glorious past. What better time to do so than now, in the city’s centenary year. This exhibition marks Uma’s happy return at the age of 77 to her first love, paint and canvas, as she celebrates her other great love—the city of Delhi.

‘The Living Legends of Delhi’ artist Uma Lohtia’s first art exhibition is a tribute to the city that commemorates its 100th anniversary as India’s capital this year. Uma’s art, which will be showcased at an exhibition in December 2011, represents Delhi’s towering monuments, imposing mosques, tombs, and exotic gardens—all formerly frequented by great emperors who hosted elaborate durbars and extended warm patronage to various forms of art. The paintings themselves, like the monuments they feature, appear ethereally hushed, with soft strokes of light and shadow, as if they too have been touched by the elements for hundreds of years.
