Event Details : 'Muslim Devotional Art in India' An illustrated presentation on popular Islamic art in India by Yousuf Saeed, a Delhi-based independent filmmaker and researcher, is also the director of Tasveer Ghar, a digital archive of India’s popular visual culture. He is the author of Muslim Devotional Art (Routledge, 2011)
India’s popular Islamic art of calendars and posters, depicting imagesof Mecca, Medina, local Sufi shrines and Quranic calligraphy, has sofar been neglected as part of the popular ephemera of street culture. But with the recent and growing interest in documenting andinterpreting the popular print culture of India, some scholars likeYousuf Saeed have been collecting and writing about these colourfulimages of devotion and syncretic culture. Such images can be seen assymbols of India’s pluralistic culture since their artists, publishersand even users are not necessarily all Muslim. Moreover, such imagesalso contain visual elements from other religions which are readyaccepted by their users.
We invite you to an evening of visual presentations and book readingsby Yousuf Saeed from his new work “Muslim Devotional Art in India”(Routledge, New Delhi, 2012). The presentation will be followed bycomments and a discussion with audience, conducted by the well-knownscholar Patricia Oberoi, who herself has been an avid collector andscholar of India’s popular visual culture.
