The Triumphant has proclaimed six (objects)
for continual mindfulness:
The Buddhas, the Dharma, the Sangha,
Generous giving, ethical discipline, and the gods.
Be continually mindful of the mass of good qualities of these.
Letter to a Friend (translated by Alexander Berzin)
Nagarjuna (1st - 2nd century A.D.) who was a celebrated scholar of Nalanda wrote this poem Letter to a Friend as a letter of advice to his friend King Gautamiputra/Satavahana.
This advice in the form of letters is actually an introduction to the path and practice of Mahayana Buddhism .As an important shastra it is a teaching not only for the monks travelling on the path of dharma and liberation but also speaks to the common people who are engaged in the day to day activites of samsara. Inspite of it being a short text of 123 verses it deals with varied aspects of life and living. It’s clarity and imagery has made this text extremely popular with great masters
Ven. Geshe Lhakdor is the Director of the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Dharamsala, India. He has served as His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s religious assistant and translator for many years and represents His Holiness’s vision and work at various national and international conferences and forums.
This year the teachings will be on Nagarjuna’s Letter to a Friend. We strongly recommend this to both starting out and advanced students of Buddhism.
As there is far greater demand for a these teachings than there is space and out of respect to the teachings and to the teacher we would like to offer places to only those committed to attending all the sessions. We need to keep this in mind as there will be a far greater demand for seats than we can accommodate
Ven. Lhakdor will also be available for personal interviews and consultations on the days of the workshop by prior appointment.
