Event Details : 'New Delhi: The First Century: Mapping the Histories of Delhi’s Tragedy of the Commons' a talk by Dr. Minoti Chakravarty-Kaul, economist with specialization in economic history which she taught at Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi, Author of Common Lands and Customary Law, Institutional Change in the Past Two Centuries (OUP, 1996)
Her current work is the “New Delhi Book” and an annotation of the correspondence of “Sir Henry Sumner Maine and common property rights debate of the nineteenth century”. She is the founder of RAHAT, a resource centre for the Gaddi shepherds in H.P. Cartographic representation is an age old method of recording history. This will be the method to unfold the story of Delhi's village commons and therefore of the village communities over the first century of New Delhi, 1911-2011. The year 1911 was the watershed in Delhi's rural history. The story of the peopling of New Delhi will complete its first century no doubt but little is known about people of those hapless village communities who had to make way to make it possible.
