Born in 1953 in Normandy, landscape architect since 1982 when he discovered the universe of tree nurseries, Pascal is more often afield than in his atelier. Pascal Cribier studied at the University of Vincennes and moved on to studying fine arts at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts (ENSBA) in Paris prior to obtaining a degree in architecture in 1978. He soon discovered the world of plants and decided to become a landscape architect. Along with Louis Benech and François Roubaud, Cribier is responsible for the renovation of the Tuileries gardens and also created the garden of the Vivendi de Méry-sur-Oise and Ircam in Paris, Donjon de Vez in l’Oise and the parc des Hauteurs in Lyon. Besides, he conceived his own garden lab on the Normany cost where he has been engaged in frenzied activity for more than twenty years.
For Cribier, a garden is neither pastiche nor décor. He pays great attention to the formal and aesthetic aspects of a garden, invisible to the eyes of ramblers – issues of maintenance and upkeep, soil quality, water and light qualities and the potential of the space. From these constraints is born innovation and an adaption to an exacting environment. And if biodiversity is a land of plenty for the eyes and the senses, if the beauty of
nature subjugates, if the colours, odours and forms answer each other, this nature is questioning us.
