The starkness of numbers in its binary opposites, in their mathematical calculations that are seldom subject to contention, this was Rohitss realm, numbers that he juggled as a chartered accountant.
In this lies also the ethos of his photography.
Colourless: in the absence of colour, the apparent is the line, the gradations. There is a conscious effort to divest the image of its colour, that which is exciting to the eye. In the act of removing the colours the photographer also removes the first layer of aesthetic beauty. An invitation for the viewer to venture in a deeper layer of forms, gradients, shaded nuances, shadows and above all away from the known… The images are of all that we awe, striking landscapes, stunning flowers, nature resplendent in its bounteous form.
As a young child armed with his father’s Rolliflex camera Rohit took his first image in the mountains of Pahalgam. That was the beginning of a lifelong passion that continued through high school at St Columba’s School, college at Delhi University, study to become chartered accountant and since then, the serious business of counting money. Here started also the merger of two passions, voyages that were documented in many a roll of films, printed and stacked in the attic.
Nature is where this photographer finds his refuge; the camera is malleable at all hours of the day and night to translate the frames into images. Away from the numbers of his professional life he captures panoramic images of the landscape, or the fine filigree of veins on a single flower petal, catching a flash of iridescent feathers, or the many hues of a monsoon sunset.
In this exhibition, Rohit has selected a set of images themed around nature in monochrome and sepia. Over the years, he has traveled an interesting path from the 120mm Rolliflex Camera to Canon Digital, capturing what his eyes fancy to make a bank of momentous memories. The photographs reflect what he sees life as… simple, unadorned and beautiful.
