Nuit et brouillard/ Night and fog
Director: Alain Resnais
1955- B&W- 32 min
Night and Fog is the masterpiece documentary by Resnais about the Second World War and the Nazi genocidal project: the first film about the concentration camps to reach a wide audience both within and outside France; a film that influenced all subsequent imagery including Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. Artfully constructed and profoundly moving, the film traces the ruins of the present against the horrors of the past. The film depicts the bittersweet liberation of Europe, the horrific discovery of the camps, and the questioning of who bears the responsibility for them.
Toute la mémoire du monde/All The World’s Memory
Director: Alain Resnais
1956- B&W- 20 min
A lyrical documentary about the National Library, All the World’s Memory reveals the behind-the-scenes activities of a massive library, following a book from its arrival in the vast institution to its placement on the shelf – a “prisoner” until it is checked out. Resnais investigates the idea of libraries as collective memory aids, a hedge against universal forgetting, with the books and librarians acting as agents in the slow battle against death.
May Screenings : For the month of May, our ciné-club will focus on the oeuvre of the tremendously talented Alain Resnais.
