A month long course in asana, pranayama and meditation conducted by Navtej Johar. Based on the teachings of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the course will offer a systematic practice in asana, pranayama and meditation aimed at promoting health, wellbeing and serenity. Methods of adapting the practice to suit individual requirements will also be included.
NAVTEJ JOHAR
Navtej Johar is a Bharatanatyam exponent and a choreographer, whose work is unique in that it freely traverses between the traditional and the avant-garde.
Performer: Trained in Bharatanatyam at Rukmini Arundale's, Kalakshetra, at Chennai, and with Leela Samson at the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi, he later studied at the Department of Performance Studies, New York University. Johar has performed at prestigious venues all over the world and has done extensive work with several prominent international companies and choreographers, including The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Co., The Chandralekha Group, Leela Samson's, Peter Sparling, Yoshiko Chuma, Alan Lommasson, John Shack, Justin McCarthy, Janet Lilly, Keith Khan, Muzaffar Ali, Anna Birch and the New York City Opera. He has collaborated with composers Stephen Rush, Shubha Mudgal, as well as installation artist Sheeba Chachi; and has also acted in films by Deepa Mehta and Sabiha Sumar.
Choreographer: Johar is recognized as a cutting edge choreographer whose work is sensitive, compelling, witty and layered. His work includes solo and ensemble works. Apart from classical Bharatanatyam it includes contemporary performance pieces, street-theatre, performance-installations, site-specific events, musicals and spectacles. A recipient of the Times of India Fellowship, 1995, and the Charles Wallace Fellowship, 1999, Johar was the performance director of the Commonwealth Parade, for the Queen's Golden Jubilee Celebrations, at London, in June 2002.
Yoga Exponent: A long time student and practitioner of yoga, Johar trained in Patanjali yoga at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, Chennai, under the guidance of Sri T.K.V. Desikachar. A yoga teacher since 1985, Johar's approach is fluid and adaptable as he freely merges asana, pranayama, visualization, mediation and Vedic chanting.
In 2004, Johar started the Abhyas Trust: a nonprofit organization dedicated to yoga, dance, urban design and the care of stray animals. He divides his time between the U.S.A. and India and is available for yoga and dance workshops, performances, lectures, and choreography assignments.

The basic tenets of Hindustani classical music have been mentioned in several ancient texts. This worshop aims to demystify them for the participants to enable them to appreciate the relevance of Raga, Tala, Vadya(musical instruments), Gharana(schools of music), musical terms and terminology and more in this day and age. It caters primarily to those who have a ear for music and who would like to expand their horizons in listening to Indian classical music and its appreciation. The 2-day worshop spread over six sessions is replete with live demonstrations as well as audio-visual presentations that markedly increase the musical awareness of the participant.
May 21 & 22 INTRODUCTION TO MEISNER TECHNIQUE by Vipin Sharma

The workshop aims to benefit actors, directors, writers or anyone who is interested in understanding how to create a credible character. It will lend an insight into a performer’s mind. This is probably the most effective technique to know how to work with actors and find words that come from truthful emotions. The participants are free to either participate or just observe.Using the infamous Repetition exercise Vipin Sharma will demonstrate the vision of one of the most insightful acting teachers in the world Sanford Meisner who trained many of the legendary actors in North American and Europe.
VIPIN SHARMA
Vipin Sharma is a graduate of the National School of Drama, New Delhi. He moved to Toronto, Canada in 1989. After having quit acting for almost more than a decade his desire to come back to it took him to Jacqueline McClintock who is an acting coach and the only Meisner expert in Canada. The impact of her classes was so strong that Vipin decided to return to India. His first film Taare Zameen Par brought him two nominations for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Screen Awards and Cineblitz. Followed by Jannat and soon to be released Rang Rasiya directed by Ketan Mehta, Vipin’s upcoming films are Paan Singh Tomar and Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, Yeh Saali Zindagi directed by Sudhir Mishra.
May 28 & 29 UNDERSTANDING SUFI LITERATURE AND SAMA Conducted by Ektara

A 2-day workshop on appreciating South Asia’s Sufi literature and Sama (Sufi soirees of listening) this workshop is meant to equip the participants to better appreciate the nuances of Sufi poetry and music by giving its historical and social contexts. The workshop is not meant to “teach” music, even though the two days will comprise of live music demonstrations, poetry readings, and screening of documentary films and archival audio and video clips. The participants will be guided on where and how to chose good Sufi literature and music in our midst. Presenters of the workshop are Madan Gopal Singh, Dhruv Sangari, Yousuf Saeed and a traditional qawwali musician from Delhi.
The workshop is open to anyone with interest in traditional poetry, music and cultural history. A knowledge or training in music is not essential. Although most presentations will be in English, a working knowledge of Urdu and Hindi (not necessarily reading capacity) will be an advantage.

JASLEEN DHAMIJA
Internationally known as ‘Philosopher of Living Cultural Traditions’ ,Jasleen has worked and researched throughout India in developing the handicraft and handloom industry, folk art, performing art, community development and women’s employment at the pioneering stage. With United Nations she worked in Iran, Middle East, Central Asia, South East Asia, the Balkans, as well as 21 countries in Africa. She has been lecturing throughout the world and has been Advisor to many governments on applied art and multi-cultural creative expression. She was awarded the Hill Professorship by University of Minnesota for her work on Textiles of the World. She has been a Faculty of National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi and Visiting Faculty at National Institute of Design. She was also Resident Scholar in Textiles at Art Colleges in University of Canberra, Sydney and Wollongong, Australia.
She has also authored several books and curated various exhibitions around textiles.
