Event Details : Film Club presents 'The Struggle Within: Women Document Their Present' screening & discussion of documentaries from Pakistan.
Select clips from Who Will Cast the First Stone (Eng/Urdu/1988/59mins) Dir.Sabiha Sumar. The film trails the story of three women in prison in Pakistan under Islamic law. Winner of the Golden Gate Award, San Francisco Film Festival, 1998. Followed by screenings-
Two Steps Forward (Punjabi/Eng/2010/30mins) Dir.Gulnar Tabassam. In 2000, over one million peasants started a movement in 10 districts of Punjab in Pakistan. Women acted as frontline fighters of the movement from 2001 to 2004. Their determination eventually left the military with no choice but to step back.
Death In The Garden Of Paradise (Eng/2004/20mins) Dir.Nurjahan Akhlaq. An elegy for her painter father, Zahoor-ul-Akhlaq and dancer sister, Jahanara Akhlaq, who were murdered in their house in Lahore. Author Uma Chakravarti will introduce the film and facilitate the discussion.
