Event Details : 'Karmazard : Indian Odyssees' In the reading of western art icons, the intention of Raja Perumal is substitutive – the figure dominating the landscape against which it is situated – and probably political, the spotlight being on the Indianised figures. Olympia (1863, Paris, Orsay Museum) of Edouard Manet has been transformed accordingly. The naked figure stretched out on the foreground of the painting and occupying its entire length is now Indian; the clothes, the ear-rings, the shoes are all Indian while the servant is European. And the cat, widely commented upon by1863 Parisian critics, has been replaced by a monkey . L’Odalisque à l’esclave (around 1837-1840, Cambridge, Mass., Fogg Art Museum), la Toilette d’Esther (1841, Paris, Louvre Museum) painted by Chassériau, or la Toilette (1883, Paris, Orsay Museum) painted by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes have been similarly transformed. Scenes of this type are thus more open to easily discernible substitutive intentions.
As translations are not innocent, the appropriation and transformation of a painting is not silent. Whatever changes 19th century French art undergoes in the hands of Perumal , he proposes a new interpretation which strikes a chord in his countrymen but is not so remote as to be meaningless in its country of origin. The flotilla of Perumal’s articulate paintings can henceforth set sail for long journeys to the country of men and mythology.
