About the Talk : The talk will give an introduction to the political economy of Egypt since the Open Door Policies in 1974 and how they impacted everyday lives of different sections of Egypt's population leading to the recent Uprising for Freedom in January 2011. The talk will also attempt to address the nature of the uprising and the coalitions that started to form before and after Mubarak's stepping down. Finally, it will discuss the current situation in the country.
About the Speaker : Dr. Dalia Wahdan holds a Doctorate of Sociology from the University of Pune and the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in Delhi. She has been teaching and practicing Anthropology since 1990 as faculty of the American University in Cairo (AUC), and as researcher for number of international organizations in Egypt, Afghanistan, South Africa and Saudi Arabia. She has published on privatization of infrastructures and governance in Egypt and India. Recently, she has completed two post-doctoral studies on planning and land-use patterns in Cairo under a Middle East Research Foundation grant (2008/9) and on integrated transport in the national capital region (Delhi) at Centre for Study of Law and Governance, JNU. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at FLAME in Pune.
