An illustrated lecture by Partha Chatterjee, film maker and music buff.
The inspiration for Hindi cinema was the nautanki and Parsi Theatre. Both forms were reliant on raga and folk based melodies to communicate with their respective audiences. These qualities carried over into the popular mainstream cinema.
