An illustrated presentation by Irfan Zuberi, a cultural consultant with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and a researcher with the newly launched digital repository Naad Saagar and Archives and Documentation Society for South Asian Music, based in Delhi.
Through recordings of Hazrat Amir Khusrau’s compositions, this talk will introduce the genre of khanqahi qawwali in the Indian subcontinent s a prominent expression of Chishti Sufism. A recitative musical genre which has evolved significantly over time, khanqahi qawwali continues to be vibrant in terms of form, wide in terms of reach and rich in terms of repertoire. This illustrated lecture-listening session will utilize recordings of Hazrat Amir Khusrau’s compositions in an attempt to familiarize the audience with the structure, purpose and meaning of this genre of Hindustani music.
