Event Description: Puja The Voice by Puja Mehra Gupta

Born in New Delhi with a deep love for music, to parents born in Undivided India’s legendary cities of Lahore and Peshawar, Puja discovered her love for music early. Mostly western music in the beginning, later as she discovered the immense cultural depth and vastness of Indian classical music, she jumped headlong into it and began her formal education in music, honing her skills and grounding herself in the lilting depths of Khayal gayaki at the famous Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Delhi. She was spellbound as she discovered the beauty of Indian Ragas with their complexity of varied swaras, or true notes and micro-notes and the tala or the rhythmic cycle tying them and its seductive pull.

This was the beginning of an endless journey which continues till date. She always believes and avers that “music is an endless Ocean of infinite depths and the more you learn and discover, the more you realize how much more there is to learn and discover, and how arduous this art is”.
She says she lives by the wisdom enshrined in the old saying ‘the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’.

Over the last few decades Puja has learnt Indian Classical, Light Classical, Ghazals, Thumri, Dadra, Sufi and Spiritual music, from several great Gurus. ‘I am always a learner’ she says philosophically, ‘as music can be found everywhere and in everyone.

Puja sings Ghalib and Momin with the same fluidity as Faiz and Faraz. You could be transported by the words of Mirza Ghalib into the 16th Century court of the Mughal Emperor Bahadurshah Zafar at one instance with the famous Har ek Baat pe kehtey ho tum kit u kya hai ; and to the revolutionary strife torn streets of a new-born nation in the legendary words of Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s Mujhse Pehli si mohabbat mere mahboob na maang in the next.

Spiritual music, Shabads and Bhajans
Puja has always been drawn towards the spiritual, whether it is the Gurbani and Shabad written in the Guru Granth Sahib or the Sufi music of great saints like Kabir Das, Rumi or Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti or the Bhajans extolling the virtues of the gods of the Hindus.
Delving into the Shabad and Gurbani, Puja has recorded Ek Onkaar, Wahe Guru and Rang Ratta in her own inimitable and endearing style. She has sung these and other shabads with equal intensity and reverence at the Gurudwaras of London and Delhi, as well as obscure gurudwaras in Punjab in India which she chanced upon. “These are true words of wisdom and the more I sing them the more humbled I am”.

“Singing shabads is my passion just as is singing ghazals or bhajans” she says, “ and my thirst for music is unsatiable”

Puja has performed solo shows at several venues across countries including the iconic Nehru centre in London.

Puja lives in New Delhi and shuttles often between India, Europe and UK.
