Event Description:
Dastaan-E-1857: Tracing the First War of Independence in Dilli!! With Ramit Mitra

Many years ago, India became an independent nation! The sweet result of years of struggle sacrifices and India's unbroken spirit.

Many historians believe that this process began with what they call the first war of Indian independence. A landmark event took place in Delhi and parts of northern India. The first large-scale revolt triggered a precursor to the million mutinies, small or big, leading to #Independence in 1947..... many years later, when the English finally left our country's shores...

On this Republic Day weekend, let the storytellers of DelhiByFoot... Adventures Unlimited!!! take you back to the tumultuous months of May till September 1857 in Dilli... And relive the 5-month battle that saw Delhi, the capital of the crumbling almost non-existent Mughal Empire thrust into prominence and "Chalo Dilli" becoming the rally for mutineers & civilians from all over Northern India!

Hear tales of courage, fool-hardy bravado and of bloody massacres that leave your pulse racing; stories that examine an alternate narrative of the stories of 1857; lesser-known tales which galvanized generations to come; as we take you around a walk to some of the prominent & strategically significant spots related to the Revolt in Delhi on our specially curated walk.

HIGHLIGHTS:
1) The heritage walk/talk covers one of Delhi’s major fort entrances that saw pitched fighting.
2) Memorials erected in the memory of Indian & British soldiers who lost their lives and a beautiful 19th century church, which was crucial on 11th & 12th May 1857.
3) Learn why #Dilli was so important to both Indian Rebel Sepoys & the English who fought for supremacy 161 yrs ago.
4) Garrison/Armoury & Telegraph Office of British in 1857
5) Examine the revolt's aftermath and how it changed the cultural & social fabric of Dilli.

The walk presentation will be done in a mix of Hindi/Urdu and British English!!
