Event Description: 5Elementz Theatre presents Bankim Chandra's Anand Matth, Hindi Play.
The play is based on the Bengali novel "Anand Matth" written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee which was published in 1889. Based on the background of the late 18th century Sanyasi Rebellion, this novel is considered one of the most important novels in the history of Indian literature. Its importance is enhanced by the fact that it was synonymous with the struggle for Indian independence from the British Empire. The novel was banned by the British and the Government of India lifted the ban after independence.
India's national song, "Vande Mataram" was first published in this novel
Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's "Anand Matth" is one of those books that evoke the feeling of nationalism in the mind of an Indian. While it touches various regions of pre-independent India, the plight of the people during the Bengal famine, humans being cannibalized by starvation and women's equal participation in revolutionary activities with husbands.
Unjust tax policies forced the people of North Bengal to agitate and the same movement was elaborated in this play. The coming together of people and doing austerity to fight for rights gives an interesting twist to the drama.
While doing the adaption we focused more on the emotional and psychological self dialogues which santan's would have gone through within their heart and soul. We can hear the resonance of internal conflicts flowing in santan's minds which appears to weaken them but how they keep them aside and overcome the internal battles within how they keep the idea of the librating motherland as a priority. 'victory over the mind' is the theme of our presentation.
