Event Description:
Salaam Baalak Trust presents a fundraiser evening of Naatya Katha by Dr. Sonal Mansingh, one of India’s finest exponents of Bharatanatyam and Odissi dance.

Salaam Baalak Trust presents a fundraiser evening of Naatya Katha by Dr. Sonal Mansingh, one of India’s finest exponents of Bharatanatyam and Odissi dance.

Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT), an NGO dedicated to support street and working children in Delhi NCR, is organising one of it's a fundraising event. The Trust was set up after the success of internationally acclaimed film Salaam Bombay by Mira Nair in 1988. To help SBT further its endeavours, acclaimed dancer Dr. Sonal Mansingh has come on board to help the organisation.

A well-known figure, Dr. Mansingh has trained several hundred talented students who are carrying the message of Indian culture globally. She teaches this particular art as a holistic concept combining music, yoga, Sanskrit and cultural traditions of India. She has also founded Shri Kamakhya Kalapeeth (Centre for Indian Classical Dances) in 1977 in Delhi.

Narrative storytelling interlaced with myths and legends is a perennial part of Dr. Mansingh’s repertoire. This ancient art gets one notch higher when the acclaimed dancer brings in aspects of philosophy, social issues and history among other such elements on the stage.

She skillfully combines her training in dance, music, Sanskrit, iconography, philosophy and languages seamlessly and touches upon issues pertaining to women, environment, ecology and socio-political situations in the country.

Dr. Mansingh is also a motivational speaker and her unique contribution has been using her knowledge to address socio-cultural issues through the chosen medium of dance. She believes that society ceases to exist when there is no mutual love, trust and support among its members. The very root of a healthy society lies in its collaborative aspect.

Till date, SBT has provided support services to over 99,000 children. Over 15,000 parents have been reunited with their children who had run away or were lost and more than 19,500 children have lived with us during this period - accessing our many services and finding a new home and a family to replace what they may have lost or left behind.

Most of us are well-versed with the name of Vicky Roy. Roy a street child, found his calling SBT. Now, he is an acclaimed international photographer.

More recently, Raja found at Old Delhi Railway station with speech and hearing impairment learnt the sign language and computers.

Similarly, Suman Rana, an alumna of SBT completed her education from Delhi University along with receiving a Gandhi Fellowship.

These are just a few of SBT’s success stories come alive with the contribution of individual and institutional donors.

Our success lies in the upliftment of children. For a bright future of such children, SBT asks its patrons to contribute as even a same contribution goes a long way in securing the future of children.

“Our annual fundraiser is a great platform not only to raise funds but to meet and interact with our supporters/donors and well-wishers. As Winston Churchill has said, ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.’ We want to reach out to more people for support,” says Tanya Alag, Head, Resource Mobilisation.

It is a great pleasure to perform for the fundraiser of Salaam Baalak Trust which works for street children. Hope to attract people to come in numbers and donate for this worthy cause shares Dr Sonal Mansingh.

It is rare that a group of people with a common aim to uplift children come together. With the contribution of its patron, the dreams of many street children could be fully realized.
