Connection

In a patriarchal and paternalistic culture like India’s, the voice of the caregiver is often the louder one. Families and spouses often make decisions for the affected person and rights are often not considered. It is time to start aligning with a societal lens, a trauma informed lens, and a rights based lens. It is time to start reclaiming ourself under all the labels often inflicted upon us.
This two-day festival features panel discussions, art, film screenings and discussions, a poetry writing workshop, open mic, and our unique peer support model called The Listening Circle. It will be an opportunity to build community, resonate with others and find comfort. The festival celebrates lived experiences and believes the people who can speak best at this event are not the so called professionals, but those who are living with various kinds of disabilities.
The festival asks questions around burden theories and capitalism, wondering why we are only judged by what we do or produce? What are the implications of looking at persons with disability or a psychosocial disability as burdens? Are their any linkages between sexuality and disability and can reclaiming sexuality lead to a reclaiming of the self? We have a few workshops—one on counselling skills for laypeople, one on art, one on poetry writing.
Some of the key people speaking at the event are: Nidhi Goyal, (disability rights leader), Ratnaboli Ray (founder, Anjali Mental Health, Kolkata), Bhargavi Davar (founder, Bapu Trust, Pune) Dr Shelja Sen, psychologist, Atasi Karmakar (protagonist of the film Atasi), and many more including people living with psychosocial disabilities like Zain Khan and Manjiri Indurkar.
We are delighted that one of our partners, Karma Centre for Counselling & Wellbeing, is curating the wellbeing aspect of our festival. There will be yoga sessions at regular intervals, a psychologist and an occupational therapist for free consultations and more.
