Event Description : THEATRE : Akshara Theatre & Team Dastangoi present "Dastan-E-Chouboli" Hindi/Urdu Comedy Play
Dastan-E-Chouboli is an adaptation of Vijay Dan Detha's own adaptation of a Rajasthani folktale and is one of modern Dastangoi's greatest hits. It is hardly a surprise because the folk story upon which it is built has the Dastanic story within story format. Detha always tweaked received folktales in order to condemn feudalism, patriarchy, upper castes and the rich so the story has acquired modern feminist tones. Mahmood Farooqui drew upon an English translation of the Dastan while preparing his original Urdu text and brought in copious amounts of 18th century Urdu poetry, including an original Shiv Bhajan to nativize the Dastan.
Performed by Meera Rizvi & Syed Shadab Hussain.
Produced by Anusha Rizvi and directed By Mahmood Farooqui.
About Dastangoi : Dastangoi is the art of Urdu storytelling which at its height was popular all across India and could regale commoners and elites alike. The performers were artists and writers rolled into one who left behind over 46000 pages of published fantasies but little less. Inspired by the scholarship of Urdu's greatest living writer S. R. Faruqi, Mahmood began its revival in 2005 and has since then trained dozens of other Dastangos, staged over a thousand shows all around the world and has composed over a dozen modern Dastans for the genre. With all the innovations the he and his team have spearheaded a virtually new genre of performance and a new kind of writing for the stage has emerged in our times.
About The Director : Mahmood Farooqui is an award winning writer and an award winning performer. He was awarded the Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Akademi of the Union Government for his effort in reviving Dastangoi. His book on the 1857 uprising 'Besieged: Voices from Delhi, 1857,' was awarded the Ram Nath Goenka Award for the best non fiction book of the year by the Indian Express Group. He has been a Visiting Fellow at the Universities of Michigan, US and Berkeley, California and was a Rhodes Scholar from India at the University of Oxford and at the University of Cambridge. His latest book is 'A Requiem for Pakistan: The World of Intizar Husain.' He is married to Anusha Rizvi, the writer-director of Peepli Live and lives in New Delhi.
