Event Description : THEATRE / WOMEN "REFUNCTION: Muhnochini" a modern fairytale through folklore and mythology
Women’s bodies are considered repositories of honour and consequently become political
battlefields. The body appears as a result of eliminations based on sexual difference and social adjustments. Borrowing from Judith Butler’s notion of gender performativity, we intend to reflect on the long performative character of gender, rooted in religion and socio-cultural practices that determine how people physically perform social relationships. Therefore a visual investigation of bodies becomes an important way to observe identity of any kind.
Muhnochini maneuvers the form of a modern fairytale through folklore and mythology. It is a story set in the present in an undefined location in Northern India that is rumored to be plagued by the presence of a chudail (popularly known as ‘Muhnochini’) who is said to rob men of their shame, as perceived by the general folk of the community. Within this community a young man in his mid-twenties, Tatha, claims to have found the long lost mythical river ‘Saraswati’ and sets on a mission to purge his community of Muhnochini, only to walk on a path of self-destruction.
