Event Description : THEATRE : Notes On Chai - A devised piece by Jyoti Dogra
“Notes on Chai” is a collection of snippets of everyday conversations inter woven with abstract sound explorations that attempt to relocate our relationship with the quotidian.
Both in terms of performance styles as well as in terms of content the piece inhabits two clearly defined spaces - of everyday conversations and sound segments that use the voice as an instrument of sound.
The piece attempts to capture a sense of the every day. This sense includes much that is not sense, so much as sensuousness, an embodied and somewhat automatic knowledge that functions like peripheral vision, not sustained contemplation, a knowledge that is imageric and sensate rather than ideational. The attempt is to create, through a series of portrayals, a collective sense of the every day, which resonates with a universal sense of the ordinary across cultures and hopefully across different socio economic strata.
In this sense, the piece addresses the everyday not at the level of content but at the level of form, attempting to outline the grammar of everyday practices keeping alive the specificity of operations while recognizing the ritual.
The abstract sound explorations in the piece are inspired from Tibetan throat singing , western overtones and extended vocal techniques. These sound techniques create different sonic textures that act as spring boards - stretching, altering and at times disrupting the spaces and sense of time created by the conversational bits. The abstract sound explorations, together with the ordinary exchanges, create a series of images and conversations simultaneously in the everyday world and at the edge of it, encouraging the spectator to attempt to relocate his / her relationship with the quotidian.
