Event Description : THEATRE "The legend of ILA (A Story in a Song)" Musical Play.
From the dusty pages of the Puranas comes the fascinating tale of ILA. At different points in time, Ila lives either as a woman or a man. This musical retelling of the legend explores the wonder and the absurdity of it all: the story, the character, and our own (somewhat limited?) notions of gender.
Oral traditions from the world over have often used music as an integral device of storytelling. With this as an inspiration, this tale is almost entirely performed in a musical. In the process, this performance has evolved into an excitingly complex musical exploration of gender fluidity and queerness.
Ultimately, seen through the lens of gender or against the larger cultural framework of tradition, the performance seeks to celebrate the spirit of doubt, wonder and inclusiveness in ways that are whimsical, quirky and unsettling.
