Event Description :
Portuguese Embassy Cultural Centre – Instituto
Camões in New Delhi presents “Hasta” an exhibition of paintings on cloth with natural dyes by Portuguese artist Francisca Carvalho

“Hasta represents hand and is significant as we are losing our natural ability to use hands. Hand is the terminal point of many nerves and is the arm of the body to reach out to the externalities of existence and it is the hand which feeds us and through hands we love. There must be a negotiator between head and hand and that must be Heart!” – Suresh Pillai

Francisca Carvalho’s works deal with the manipulation of symbols coming from specific geo-temporal contexts. These symbols hold the capacity to contain and synthesize subconscious apprehensions of the world in particular geo-time frames, crisscrossing each other and uniting us as human beings, connecting us with our surroundings.
Printed patterns have been playing a role on enhancing our perception, educating our ways of seeing and thinking. Somehow, they have the power to imprint a rhythm, a vibration, in our subconscious mind, and to create an environment. They also tell a story about the region where they were made, they encapsulate social-psychic narratives, labor-based structures.
Francisca Carvalho has been in India since January 2018 on Fundação Oriente and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian fellowships to undertake a hands-on research on
natural dyes and hand block printing, practiced in Rajasthan. This exhibition is the result

of a three months’ residency and apprenticeship at Jai Texart in Jaipur and Bagru.
