Says Shobha Deepak Singh: “The Kendra’s Musical journey began in 1947 on the day India got independence – to celebrate freedom from bonded music.  From thereon, the festival has gone from strength to strength with a change in name, the vintage remains the same.   Initially known as ‘Jhankar’, the Kendra’s music festival was performed at the venues such as Red Fort, Jantar Mantar, NDMC building, Constitutional Club, Mavlankar Hall.  From Jhankar, the show went on to be called as Bharatiya Kala Kendra Music Festival.  In 1997, it was known as the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra Music Festival and from there on it was known in the name of ShriramShankarlal Music Festival.  Over seven decades, the music has maintained higher standard of musical reverence of the audience of New Delhi.”

In its initial two decades, the festival consisted mainly of eminent instrumentalist such as Ali Akbar Khan, Nikhil Banerjee, Pannalal Ghosh, Vilayat Khan and Devchandra Mandeshwar.
