Event Description : Please join us for the third of the Art on Film screenings, a bimonthly event of films on and by visual art and artists. This time we are showing two short films made by M. F. Husain and Tyeb Mehta, luminaries of Indian modern art.
Through the Eyes of a Painter (1967, 15 mins, B/W) | 6 PM
Director: M. F. Husain
Producer: Films Division
Medium: 35 mm
M. F. Husain, a modernist artist and the founding member of the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group, painted cinema billboards early in his career, which perhaps influenced his paintings on other large canvasses later in life. Through the Eyes of a Painter (1967) was the first of his several films. It contains a series of his impressions as he journeyed through Rajasthan, which he often visited. Set to music composed by the flute maestro Vijay Raghav Rao, the film traverses the architecture, people and spaces that comprised Husain’s India.
Koodal (1970, 16 mins, B/W) | 6-30 PM
Director: Tyeb Mehta
Producer: Films Division
Medium: 35 mm
Tyeb Mehta, a bold modernist painter, began his career as a film editor in a cinema laboratory. In 1970 the Films Division commissioned his film Koodal. Titled after the Tamil word for an assembly of images, this experimental montage contained surreal footage of the city, its people and cattle, and a hypnotic soundscape. The citizens' uncontrolled terror and fear of their stifled daily lives lends a palpable sense of underlying violence to the film.
