Event Description :
EXHIBITION "The Eminent Citizen" by Vir Kotak

Presented by Swapan Seth

Vir's current body of work is a cynical play on the oft-quoted phrase that was also the title of WH Auden’s well-known poem The Unknown Citizen. Through a play of light and shadow against architecture, his works evoke the social structures that enable the world’s one percent of affluent, ‘eminent citizens’ to remain isolated in their world-view, and disconnected from the social reality of the majority. Vir seeks out the gap in communication and the impossibility of empathy between classes of people in the crevices of the everyday, his travels and encounters with people around the world. This current global condition that we occupy is the symptom and the cause of the alienation and tragedy of the eminent citizen, to which they are often oblivious. His abstract treatment of the figure of the eminent citizen in his photographs and moving images are supplemented by his text-based work. His verses are presented as an artist book that is also on display alongside his foray into ceramic.

Vir Kotak (born 1985, Mumbai) is a self-taught artist who often works with lens-based media besides sound, sculptural installation and drawing. Vir’s first solo exhibition, ‘The Memory Project’ was on view at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai (2017). He has since been featured as part of group exhibitions and has been part of curated projects, variously at the Kala Ghoda Festival, Mumbai (2017); Kala Sakshi Foundation Show, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi (2009); and Nature Morte Summer Show, Nature Morte, New Delhi (2017). Vir works with minimal imagery to create complex, inward-looking narratives. He experiments variously with form and media to stage sublime encounters based on pure aesthetic phenomena and visual play. Vir’s line-based drawings are often created through a process that is multi-layered in its approach, which recently extended to his collaborative work with ceramic.
