Candle light procession from Town Hall, Chandni Chowk to Ballimaran (Ghalib’s Haveli) to celebrate Birth Anniversary of Ghalib.
Ghalib’s Birth and Death Anniversary every year with the help of Delhi Govt. which includes a Candle Light Procession to Ghalib’s Haveli from Town Hall, Mushaira in traditional andaz & a cultural programme based on Ghalib’s writing. This programme is a culmination of this year’s Ghalib’s Birth Anniversary Celebration. Uma Sharma is totally committed to this task and have been trying to keep this movement going as homage to the great poet.
Uma Sharma’s dance today will seek to interpret the traumas of Ghalib as he goes through various stages of feeling in his life. The first is Ghalib as a romantic, the second as jealous lover, the third as a man of infinite sadness, the fourth in a state of nostalgic remembrance of all that life held and the despair it brought. Finally Uma brings this beautiful dance composition to an end by portraying the finality with which Ghalib interprets the last flicker of flame
About Uma Shankar (Padma Bhushan Kathak Dancer)
Uma Sharma Strikes chords in the hearts of connoisseurs and lay persons alike. She has gone far beyond the rhythmic fervour of Kathak poetically inclined, intellectually curious, but passionately involved in the future direction of Kathak, it is as the queen of bhav that she has carved as special niche for herself.
On an occasion such as this to commemorate Ghalib, here then is a dancer who has decided to almost relive through her interpretation of his poetry, as he said : Ik Shamma Reh Gayee Hai So Woh Bhi Khamosh Hai. Actually, Uma Sharma seems to have vowed to bring Asad-Ullah Khan Ghalib back to life, right there in the eye of the new millennium. Here then is Uma Sharma recreating for us the inner world of the poet and the man.
