Event Description : Embassy of Hungary and the Hungarian Infomration and Cultural Centre presents a concert by the world renowned Kalaka Ensemble from Hungary

Everybody in Hungary in the age group 3-90 years knows what Kaláka is. This charming and    versatile group of five musicians (Gábor Becze, Dániel Gryllus, Vilmos Gryllus, Gábor Major,    Balázs Radványi) with their special Hungarian instruments will be joined by Anna T. Szabó who is a scholar of Hungarian literature, a poet, a writer and an outstanding translator of poetry. She says about Kaláka: ’Kaláka is one of Hungary's national treasures. As their name means voluntary community service, they've been tirelessly spreading the joy of music and the elevating power of sung poetry all over the world for almost fifty years with the same zest, ingenuity and enthusiasm.’

During the concert, the viewers can watch the members of Kaláka picking up double-bass,  guitar, flutes, zither, panpipe, clarinet, guitar, lute, Jewish harp,12 string guitars, viola one after the other and playing them with equal ease and flexibility. Poems in songs by János Arany, the famous Hungarian poet(1817-1882) will be one of the main themes of all the concerts, celebrating Arany’s two hundredth anniversary. Arany’s  funny, philosophical and dramatic poetry will be presented along with the poems of other Hungarian and Indian poets. Anna T. Szabó will be the moderator of the programmes and she will speak about the poet and his poems in the context of Hungarian literature and music.
