Event Description : 
Sahmat invites you to the 29th Safdar Hashmi Memorial on 1st January 2017 for an evening of cultural performances, art exhibitions and book release. This is an event that is organized every year on the first day of the new year to mark the dastardly attack on a group on street theater activists in 1989, which eventually claimed the life Safdar Hashmi, actor and founder, Jan Natya Manch (Janam). 

Theatre groups Bigul, Jatan and Jan Natya Manch (Kurukshetra) will perform their respective plays. Arman Ali Dehalvi will present the first musical performance of the afternoon.

We will be screening Virender Saini’s 1993 film Ayodhya at 3.30 pm, which will be followed by first person account of the events of 6th December 1992 by Suman Gupta, Praveen Jain and Ruchira Gupta. Later in the afternoon, a Pune Group will present their play “Main Safdar”.

Madangopal Singh will be performing in the evening and then, noted Carnatic singer T.M. Krishna will be performing for the first time on the Sahmat platform. The evening of cultural performances will be completed with a dramatic performance by Maya Rao.

Sahmat will also be mounting an exhibition “Beyond Disputes: Landscapes of Dissent” to mark the 25th anniversary of the Babri Masjid Demolition with over 40 artists displaying their works across different mediums. Sahmat will also be displaying its previous exhibition “Hum Sab Ayodhya” alongside the new displayed works. Ram Rahman has also curated portraits of peasants and farmers from across the country under the title, “The Parched Earth”.
